It's hard to believe now, but HBO executives were reportedly so nervous audiences wouldn't understand The Sopranos was a crime drama that they requested the now-iconic logo feature a gun as the letter R. The series debut on January 10, 1999, introduced viewers to Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini
), the troubled head of a Jersey mob family; his wife Carmela (Edie Falco
); his two children; and his therapist (Lorraine Bracco
), and was a breakout hit that ushered in a new era of prestige TV.
